Protect Your Computer For Free

A lot of folks contact us because their computers have been infected with viruses or slowed down by junk software and spyware.  They all ask me the same question: What is the best antivirus program?  If you've come to this page looking for an antivirus program that will guarantee you will never get another virus, keep looking.  I doubt you'll find such a page because I haven't encountered an antivirus program which will block 100% of all viruses and threats.

What I do advise these clients of is several free options they have to protect their computers from viruses and other threats.  If you take a good, free security product and combine it with responsible web browsing, you can prevent the problems that get most users into trouble.

For home computers, if you are not running a business from it or using your computer for work, you are eligible to install AVG Free Antivirus software which is a great and easy to use free software package available from AVG Technologies.

A free anti-spyware program called Windows Defender is available from Microsoft to all users of Genuine Windows XP (pirates need not apply).  It provides regular updates as new threats are identified, and identifies and removes all kinds of junk software and threats.

Reformat & Reinstall Windows XP

Make a commitment. Reformatting and reinstalling Windows is not something that should be undertaken lightly or if you are in a hurry, but is the best and only way to completely restore a computer to its best operating condition. Once you have exhausted other troubleshooting methods, a reinstall may be your only option left.  Before you get started, it is important to make a commitment to yourself that you will spend the several hours necessary to do it properly. There are also a few other things you'll need before you get started.

Starting checklist. These are the things we recommend you have before getting started on your reinstall.

  • Windows XP System Disk
  • A working USB memory drive with at least 100MB free space
  • An external hard drive or CD/DVD burner
  • A high-speed internet connection
